Homelessness Statistics for Manatee and Sarasota Counties


All local service statistics reported below are obtained from the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS). Those people who do not request services from a provider that is using HMIS are not being counted.

Over 13,600 people were served by our homeless service providers in 2006.

Of this number, 29% or 4,027 were children.

*Services received can include food, shelter, transportation, financial funds, medical care, and other items which are provided by agencies to both fulfill he immediate needs of the homeless and to help prevent homelessness for those currently at risk.

As of March 31st, 1,629 students in Sarasota County schools have been identified as homeless!

1,485 currently enrolled Manatee County students have been homeless at some point during the current school year!

It is estimated that 1 out of 100 Americans will experience homelessness this year

Families now account for over 40% of the homeless and is the fastest growing section of the homeless population.

More than 130 local children have had to sleep in a homeless shelter so far this year.

The average rent of apartments in complexes with more than 100 units in Sarasota County reached $989 during the second quarter of 2006. That is a 19.9 percent increase from the average rent of $825 in the second quarter of 2005.
